The International Training and Education Center on HIV (I-TECH), a collaboration between the University of Washington and University of California San Francisco, is a global AIDS training program working at the invitation of ministries of health and the U.S. government to increase human and institutional capacity for care and treatment in countries hardest hit by the HIV and AIDS epidemic.
I-TECH was founded in 2002 by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) in collaboration with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to share lessons learned from the U.S. domestic AIDS Education and Training Centers. As countries ramp up prevention, care, and treatment efforts, they need training programs, management advice, health education materials, and guidance on message design and targeted communication. We have 350 staff members worldwide working from 10 field offices in partnership with approximately 100 non-governmental organizations, and we support capacity development in more than a dozen countries.
I-TECH works primarily on activities that contribute to the achievement of the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR). Program activities are under way in nearly all the activity categories funded by PEPFAR. For example, I-TECH is currently helping countries to scale-up antiretroviral treatment for AIDS, reduce stigma and discrimination around HIV and AIDS, produce educational materials and approaches that support transfer of learning from classroom to workplace, and integrate AIDS care with other critical health and economic development needs.
I-TECH has one of the largest HIV and AIDS nursing initiatives in the world, and is a leader in clinical mentoring. I-TECH also maintains a public database of more than 1,200 training resources in multiple languages from more than 300 organizations worldwide, one of the largest repositories of online training materials on the topic of HIV and AIDS.
